The last week of school has arrived and I keep hearing about all you moms out there who are running around like a chicken with your head cut off trying to find some last minute teacher gifts! Lucky for you – I’ve got you covered with a bunch of ideas. I don’t have any school-aged children yet BUT I do have a sister who has three school-aged children and who is a teacher herself! I also work as a school secretary, so needless to say, I’ve got the inside scoop on what gifts teachers actually want and this list of teacher gift ideas may surprise you!
Did you know that teachers put out a lot of their own money towards their classrooms? Yup, that’s right! Their hard-earned income is often put back into the classrooms to provide your children and their students with the tools and supplies that they need for their education. So stock your teachers up with dry-erase markers, glue sticks, markers and craft supplies in general! Every little bit helps out!
2. Think Summer!
After busting their butts all year round, teachers have earned their summer vacation and should enjoy it! So why not gift them something that they can enjoy during their holidays! Think outdoors: patio, gardens and all the outdoor activities that your teacher participates in.
3. Personal Gifts
Steer away from the knick-knacks and consider buying a gift that speaks to your teacher. Think back to a conversation that you may have had or a fun tid-bit of information that they once shared about themselves and roll with that! For example, my sister has chickens and one parent thought to include some kitchen towels with chickens print on them in her gift basket! Other great ideas include gift baskets filled with teacher-like paraphernalia like agendas, note pads, perhaps a sentimental piece of jewellery specially for teachers. Keep it simple but also make it personal to your teacher so that they feel like you truly listen and appreciate them!
4. The Note
There’s something really special about a hand written note. Teachers often go the extra mile without expecting anything in return. They’re simply doing their job to care for your children and to teach them the skills they need to advance! So take the time to recognise your teacher with a hand written note. Let them know about something that your child has done or said that they learned in class. Tell them how much you appreciate them. Last year I received the most thoughtful and unexpected hand-written note from a parent that I have kept tucked away and read whenever I feel like I’m not doing a good enough job. It honestly makes the hard days in the office (which there are plenty of) so incredibly worth it knowing that I’m recognised, appreciated and thought of, just because I’m doing my job!
5. Gift Certificates
Although it may not seem like the most thoughtful present, gift certificates are considered gold to teachers! Dollar Store, Walmart, Scholars Choice, Indigo and all the coffee joints that are in the school neighbourhood. Stock your teachers up so that they can use the gift cards to replenish their school supplies and to ensure that they have access to all the caffeine that they could possibly need (which is a lot by the way).
There you have it – five simple and last minute teacher gift ideas that will make any teacher feel special! Just remember to keep it personal, useful and if anything, make sure to include that hand-written note! The countdown to summer vacation is on! I hope you all enjoyed spending time with me today and let me know in the comments, what’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
