My husband and I have been together for over 10 years. We met when we were young, in college and had zero responsibilities. Like most couples, we’ve been through a lot and I’ve decided to dedicate an entire series here on the blog to our relationship. Let’s start at.. well, the beginning.
It was around this time in 2007 when Kyle and I first met. He added me to Facebook (yes – we met on Facebook) and I had no idea who he was except that we had some mutual friends. I was told that he saw a picture of me and thought I was pretty cute, so I decided to accept his friend request to see if he was pretty cute too. He was. We spoke for a few weeks but since he was away for college we decided that we’d hang out over the winter break. Winter break came and a bunch of our mutual friends and I were headed to the city. They took it upon themselves to invite Kyle since they knew he was interested in me. I can safely say that we did not speak one word to each other that entire day. I remember that we some how ended up at a taping for MuchMusic and Kyle was more interested in being on TV than he was in me. The feeling was mutual. Although we didn’t speak much that day, we continued to talk over MSN (yes… MSN). He was still away at college and involved in the varsity volleyball team and since he travelled a lot for that and since I was directionally challenges (I still am to this day), hanging out just wasn’t an option for us.
It wasn’t until the school year ended in April that we began talking more and decided that we’d go on a date. Unlike the first time we met, I do remember this day. I remember what he was wearing, what I was wearing and the fact that he had a bunch of beer bottles clashing around in the trunk of his car for which he did apologise for. He said he had ” a bunch of empties to bring to the Beer Store from the end of the year parties”. I thought to myself… “Oh lordy… here we go.”.
Much to my surprise, the date went over very well. We had good conversation, went mini putting and enjoyed delicious ice cream desserts. It was pretty much the typical date in our neck of the woods. According to Kyle, I mentioned the name “Rob” a lot. Unbeknownst to Kyle, Rob’s my brother-in-law who was annoyingly texting me that day knowing full well that I was on a date. Typical brother. Even though Rob was constantly texting and annoying me for the entire date, Kyle asked me out again. We spoke everyday and continued to hang out the weeks to follow until… we broke things off. Kyle and I had an off and on relationship that summer. Kyle wasn’t fully committed (take that as you will) and I just wanted to enjoy my summer and college experience. It wasn’t until the end of the summer when Kyle had to head back to college that things changed. Something just clicked. We had spent the entire summer back and forth, unsure of our relationship but when the time came for Kyle to move back to school, we both realised that we didn’t want to be apart. Cheesy, yet true. From that moment forward – Kyle and I took the first steps towards the rest of our lives and fell in love.
