As someone who loves makeup, I even find myself overwhelmed by the amount of products out there! There are just SO many options and I can understand why people feel lost in the makeup isles. You may find yourself wondering if you need contour powder and highlighters, how many eye shadows you need and whether or not you need foundation in your life. So today, we’re starting off with the basics when it comes to your makeup bag. These are the essentials that will suit anyone and everyone and will keep your makeup routine simple! I’ve narrowed it down to my top 6 products that will leave you looking fresh and I’m sharing the number one mistake I see a lot of beauty gurus making that you might be making too!
5. Lip Stick
Lipstick is the finishing touch. Not wearing any is equivalent to eating a chocolate cake and scraping off the frosting. Everyone knows that frosting is the best part and without it, the cake is simply baked batter. I know that lipstick isn’t for everyone but it’s come a lot way since the days when your grade 5 teacher sported it all over her teeth. Lipstick can change your everyday makeup look. If you’re like me and wear the same makeup everyday, switching out your lip colours will totally alter your look. What I love most about lipstick is that it makes you look “done up” and it completes the look! If you’re new to wearing lip products, choose a tinted lip balm or coloured gloss instead!
4. Eyebrow Pencil/Powder
I am obsessed with eyebrows and you can read all about my love for them here. Don’t underestimate the power of a good brow! Whenever you’re having a conversation with someone they often make contact with your eyes. So keeping that eye area looking sharp is super important! There are many days where I don’t wear makeup but do make sure that my eyebrows are looking good. Your eyebrows define your entire face so keep them polished and give them lots of love! If you’re interested in knowing how I groom and fill in my brows, let me know in the comments and maybe, just maybe, I’ll share my brow routine with you! Yes – they have they’re own routine…. they’re THAT important!
The latest craze has been lash extensions. Women all over are sporting a gorgeous set of lashes all day long without having to put on any mascara! It sounds like a great idea, but if you’re like me, you may be worrying about the extensions ruining your lashes or about the expense and maintenance that comes along with them. My favourite mascaras are from the drug store. They don’t break the bank and ring in anywhere between $6 to $8 and are replaced every 3 months. As opposed to lash extensions, mascara isn’t a commitment and can be removed and put on at any time. It will do the same job of opening up your eyes making them appear bigger, brighter and more awake, and what Mom doesn’t need help with that?
When I first started wearing makeup, blush was one of the two products my Mom allowed me to wear. It’s hands down the number one product that takes over my entire makeup collection. I have a range of shades and finishes but lately have been favouring a neutral-rose colour. If you’re looking for an everyday blush, I’d highly recommend looking for one in a neutral shade that suits your skin tone and makes you look naturally flush. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks, starting two fingers away from your nose and work it up to the top of your ear. This will give your cheeks definition without having to worry about contouring and will liven up your skin with a beautiful glow!
Yup – not foundation! It’s my number one favourite product and always choose it over foundation. If you’re ever online looking at makeup tutorials, you’ll see that 90% of makeup gurus use foundation for every single look. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves and in my opinion is a huge mistake and very unnecessary! If you’re looking to keep your skin looking natural while still concealing some spots and blemishes, use concealer! Look at your skin and point out the areas that you would like to conceal. Chances are you’re just looking to cover up your dark circles and any blemishes. If you’re applying a medium to full coverage foundation all over your face, everyday, you’re covering up beautiful skin that doesn’t need concealing. Yup – you’re wasting product on that perfect skin in between those blemishes. So if you have a breakout or want to conceal some red or dark areas on the skin, refrain from putting on a blanket of foundation. Spot conceal those areas instead and let your real skin shine through. If your concern is about evening out your skin tone due to redness or blotchy skin, consider wearing a tinted moisturiser instead of foundation. It will give you an light and even base to work with and you can follow it up by spot concealing those areas that may need extra attention. For an even more budget friendly and minimal approach, make your own tinted moisturiser by mixing a bit of concealer with some of your daily moisturiser.
